Your guide to a refreshing ‘cool‑cation’ in Sussex
When the temperature rises, Sussex offers far more than just a day at the seaside. With its breezy coastline, shaded ancient woodlands, historic attractions and tranquil gardens, this is a destination designed for warm‑weather exploring.
Whether you're visiting from London or travelling from further afield, Sussex is packed with ways to stay cool while making the most of summer. Here are five great ways to escape the heat and enjoy everything this beautiful region has to offer.
Escape to Sussex's stunning coastline
Back to Top of List1. Escape to Sussex’s stunning coastline
Nothing beats a sea breeze and views on a hot summer day, making the Sussex coast a perfect city escape. Sussex is home to some of England's most iconic coastal spots, from dramatic white cliffs at Seven Sisters and the King Charles III England Coast Path with access to 140 miles of beaches.
Top experiences:
Take an early morning walk along the Seven Sisters Country Park or explore sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path
Enjoy a paddle or swim at popular seaside towns such as Eastbourne, Worthing and Hastings – all easily reached by train from London in just over an hour and with Lifeguards on duty for family-friendly dips
Hire a beach hut in Lancing for a traditional seaside experience, giving a sheltered spot to spend the day
Stop for refreshments and sea views at coastal favourites such as Goat Ledge in St Leonards, The Beach in Littlehampton or Perch on the Pier
Top Tip: Avoid crowded coastal spots like Witterings and Seven Sisters during peak season. There are plenty more stunning wide open coastal spaces and beaches to enjoy, which are still relatively quiet. Explore our Beaches page for more inspiration.
