Explore the regions of Sussex

There’s nowhere quite like Sussex. With charming towns, picturesque villages, rolling hills and over 100 miles of coastline, you’ll find something for everyone. Discover what makes each destination different, as you explore a captivating county filled with history, culture, seaside charm and breathtaking natural beauty.

Journey through time

First up is Chichester – a city steeped in history. Don’t miss its must-see landmarks, including its 900-year-old cathedral and the nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace. To the east, Arundel is a riverside town with a towering cathedral and 11th-century castle, where guests can explore its grounds and grand halls.

Partial to a castle? Head to the 11th-century Lewes Castle or the 14th-century Bodiam Castle, nestled in the High Weald National Landscape near Robertsbridge. Any history buff will also want to visit Battle – the site of William the Conqueror’s victory in 1066.

Lewes itself is a much-loved mediaeval town with beautiful boutiques and a vibrant cultural scene, just a stone’s throw from the Glyndebourne Opera House. From here, you’re also close to Haywards Heath and the wonderful Wakehurst, which is a Kew-managed garden spanning 500 acres.

Venture into nature

Just north from Haywards Heath is East Grinstead, which is known for the timber-framed buildings lining its high street. Looking for a one-of-a-kind experience? This is the starting point for the Bluebell Railway, a traditional steam train that rolls through the Sussex countryside.

The greenery near Crawley and Gatwick (much more than an airport!) is one of Sussex’s best-kept secrets. Take a stroll through the lakes and woodlands at Tilgate Park. Or why not turn your hand – or steering wheel – to off-roading at Crawley Down?

The neighbouring market town, Horsham, offers everything from walking trails and cycling routes, to open vehicle safaris across the Knepp Estate. And just 30 minutes from here is Petworth, a quaint town best-known for Petworth House – a magnificent stately home with a remarkable art collection, including works by Turner.

The coast with the most

For vintage seaside vibes, you can’t go wrong with Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, where you’ll find plenty of activities with a nostalgic feel. Kids and grown-ups alike will love the retro amusement arcades, ice-cream parlours, ‘chippies’ and more.

Or why not discover the iconic piers at Eastbourne and Worthing? These classic coastal towns have vibrant arts scenes, giving them a modern twist. (The Towner Gallery in Eastbourne even hosted the Turner Prize). From Eastbourne, you’re only 30 minutes from Newhaven, with its historic fort and four-hour ferry to France.

For coast, culture and history all wrapped into one, Hastings delivers. The Old Town area has a unique bohemian vibe, with art galleries, antique shops, and seafood restaurants. The nearby Rye is another enchanting mediaeval town that takes you back in time, with cobbled streets, timber-framed houses, and historic inns.

From scenic coastal escapes to idyllic country retreats and historic towns, Sussex offers a diverse tapestry of places to explore, each with its own charm. We can’t wait to welcome you.
