Sussex by Car

Visiting by car? Before you travel please visit our Public transport pages to look at alternative options, which may offer an easier route. Peak times and the summer months can mean some roads are busier, particularly near coastal attractions.

If you would prefer to visit by car, here’s everything you need to know about driving in Sussex:

Major Roads:
Sussex is well-connected by a network of key roads. The A27 runs east-west through the county,  linking major towns like Lewes and Chichester. The A23/M23 provides a direct route from London into Sussex via Gatwick and on to the coast, while the A21 connects the east and the A24 links the west of the county to the M25 ring road and London.

Car Parks:
Sussex offers plenty of parking options, from large town centre car parks to smaller, rural locations near beauty spots. In coastal towns like Eastbourne, and Worthing, you’ll find pay-and-display parking. Many car parks also offer cashless payment options via apps. For countryside areas such as the South Downs National Park and High Weald National Landscape, keep to designated parking areas near trails and viewpoints. Please do not blocking entrances to private homes or businesses or the roads.

Driving Tips:

  • Many towns have narrow streets or pedestrianised areas, so please check signage carefully for restrictions.
  • Be mindful of cyclists, walkers and animals, especially on rural roads
