National Parks & Landscapes in Sussex

Sussex is home to three nationally designated protected landscapes, each offering its own distinctive scenery, wildlife and opportunities to explore the great outdoors. From rolling chalk downland and dramatic coastal views to ancient woodlands, heathland and tranquil harbours, these special places showcase some of the county's most beautiful countryside.

The South Downs National Park stretches across Sussex, offering miles of walking and cycling routes, picturesque villages, ancient woodland and breathtaking views towards the English Channel. Follow the famous South Downs Way, explore the dramatic white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters or discover the historic landscapes of the Sussex countryside. The Seven Sisters Country Park is also a wonderful place for wildlife watching and enjoying the spectacular coastal scenery, with views recognised from films including Harry Potter and Wicked.

To the north and east, the High Weald National Landscape is characterised by rolling hills, ancient woodlands, sandstone outcrops and winding historic routeways. Explore the beautiful countryside around Ashdown Forest, famously the inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood in Winnie-the-Pooh, or discover the tranquil villages and wooded valleys that make this area so special.

Along the south coast, the Chichester Harbour National Landscapep is a haven for wildlife and a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors. Its sheltered waters, saltmarshes, mudflats and picturesque villages create a distinctive coastal landscape, perfect for sailing, walking, birdwatching and exploring the beautiful harbourside communities.
