Discover Newhaven’s maritime past
Newhaven has guarded this stretch of coast for generations. Its harbour has seen cross‑Channel journeys, wartime stories and countless everyday departures and arrivals. The town’s most striking historic landmark is Newhaven Fort, which stands high above the harbour with impressive views along the coast.
A visit to the fort offers a mix of history, exploration and fresh air. You can learn about its role in defending the Sussex shoreline, step into atmospheric tunnels and gun emplacements, and enjoy panoramic views across the harbour, town and sea. Down at water level, the breakwater, lighthouse and port area give a real sense of Newhaven as a working, living harbour.
